Description

Resonance of Drums and Indigenous Voices

At 7 PM on October 3rd, the first weekend of the Far Far Away Festival begins with a journey of "The Sounding Memory", inviting you to a night of percussive storytelling across cultures. Join us at Launcher Lab as the rhythms of drums usher in the Mid-Autumn evening, grounding us in the voices of the land.

The performance "Resonance of Drums and Indigenous Voices" by Djembe Yoyola opens with Kudani: Song of the Grandmother—a fusion of Paiwan chants and West African rhythms, paying homage to ancestors and elders from different cultures. The journey continues with drum compositions from Côte d'Ivoire and the Susu and Malinke peoples of West Africa, layered with vocals, bass, trumpet, and nose flute. Pieces include Kuku: Celebration of Moonlight and Fishing Nets, Yankadi–Marcu: Rhythms of Encounter and Dance, Soliwoulen: Invocation of Ancestors and Healers, and culminates in Moribayassa: Dance of Gratitude, a powerful drum solo signifying release and thanksgiving after hardship. Each rhythm is a vessel of story and blessing, and a drumming journey from the African continent to the southern shores of Taiwan. With each beat flowing like a heartbeat, the rhythms welcome the first blessing of the Mid-Autumn moonrise.

As the drums echo through Chengdong Dayuanzi, the Far Far Away Festival's sonic journey officially begins—a rhythmic crossing of continents and cultures. From sunset to nightfall, let us move together with the beat, dancing in moonlight with voices from all walks of life. In drumbeats and moonbeams, may we remember ourselves and hear each other.
