A Crazy Kind of Hope
Conceived and directed by Sarah Chase in creation with performer Andrea Nann
Awarded the 2019 DORA MAVOR MOORE AWARD for outstanding performance by an Individual in Dance
"A Crazy Kind of Hope" is an intimate solo performance combining beautifully articulate, hypnotic movement patterns with stories of hope, heartbreak, and healing. Created in choreographer Sarah Chase's unique dance-storytelling form, the work draws on simple, numbered gestures that gradually intersect and harmonize, evoking a poetic world shaped by memory and emotion.
Waves of ocean come and go, as dancer and co-creator Andrea Nann shares personal stories of her Uncle Wayne—a potter who lived on a remote island—of of her life partner Andy, and their daughter Chi Lin, who lived for 999 days She sings a Bob Dylan song through gesture, allowing loss, healing, and the act of letting go to ripple through the body and space, transforming grief into quiet beauty.
“Nann's solo in the piece "echoes the emotional themes of forging strength from grief," with her "confident and precise movements" delivering a captivating, emotionally resonant performance.”"- Mooney on Theatre
"ease in movement yet a sense of endurance, tribulation, and loss," creating an enigmatic and profoundly affecting experience - The Georgia Straight
